Inline Filtering distillate before bottling

I would like to set up an inline filter attached to the spout of our beaker and wrench gear pump, where the distillate exits our rolling film. This would likely be a compression swagelok fitting. I’m trying to capture any unwanted debris or particulate that might find its way into the stream. Does anyone have any suggestions on a set up that could accomplish this? Thanks for any suggestions!

Wouldn’t filtering BEFORE the WFE make more sense?

what sort of particulates are you GENERATING in your WFE?

(addressing the proximal cause rather than the symptom is probably more appropriate if you ARE generating particulates during your process)

Swagelok does make filters, but if you’re noticing particulates my guess is these will clog immediately

yes that makes perfect sense. We filter down to 1 micron pre decarb. Maybe I can do a fine filter post decarb as solids can coalesce during that process, and even post terp pass. However the nature of running as much material as we do through the rolling film allows the occasional small fiber, or particles of dust or even a remnant residue behind from terp pass that inevitably enters the stream. I would like to bottle the cleanest liter possible free of any debris. Every once in a while something the size of a pepper flake may show up. So, overwhelming a filter post gear pump is unlikely to happen quickly. Increasing the amount of filtering pre distillation will help I’m sure but may not fully negate the need for a final filter pre bottle to be absolutely sure it’s the best looking liter. By having this inline I hope to remove the transfer loss associated with collecting the distillate in a vessel, heating to maintain vsicosity and filtering it in an additional step.

Can your gearpump pumg against some pressure? If so, the inlines that cyclopath linked will probably work.

If not, you could try to just let the pump dump the distillate onto a jar filter. We use a little kitchen stainless screen filter to catch diamonds that don’t completely decarb in our decarb vessels when we drain them into media bottles. Something like that, with maybe a finer mesh of stainless screen laid inside it would also probably work, as long as the viscosity is low enough to flow.

thanks for the link @cyclopath

Check out chemtek as well. The have a column with a candlestick filter that I use for HTE. I am sure you could pass disty through as well.

we use 6" x 1.5" sock filters in a sight-glass on the way out of decarb…straight into gal/0.5gal jars.

edit: finding them in low um is next to impossible.

the Chemtek candle filters would probably fit in a 2" x 6" sight glass.

Pretty sure these exist in 2", if making/commissioning your own isn’t an option.

then the swageloks are likely a perfect match.

All stainless, cleanable, heat-able (or just insulate well).
