What did you change to go clear? And most definitely should be nicely lined!
Below is the setup I used in order to polish these slabs:
I took my collection pot and put the old ball valve on, then started with a 0.2 micron, then 5 micron, then 20 micron filter. On top of the 20 micron was another 20 micron Whatman filter, along with cotton balls to fill the rest of the filter stack - packed very tightly.
Next, I poured my pentane/B80 slurry into the column and allowed the solvent to penetrate the filters up until I saw a few drops of solvent drop into the collection pot and closed the ball valve. I then proceeded to pour my concentrate dissolved in Pentane (10:1 by weight) into the column and kept a slight vacuum on the column in order to keep solvent flowing once I opened the ball valve again. As the chromatography started, I kept the column topped off until all my solvent had been put into the column (it definitely wouldn’t all fit at first).
Once the all of the solvent had passed through the filter stacks, I closed off the ball valve and setup for pentane recovery the same way I setup for butane recovery - the only difference is my TRS21 was not attached to a gas cylinder - it was open to the Pentane bucket lol.
Once the recovery was finished and pressure was just under atmospheric pressure I poured off slab like normal and purged to completion.
Attached are pictures of the filters and such - I really like the cotton ball method for keeping crc media off your smaller sized filters and it seemed to work great!
This is with the top few cotton balls removed - only the sides that had area uncovered were exposed to B80.
Here is the first Whatman in the filter
Out of the filter (mind you, I ripped it removing the filter paper)
The second Whatman
Out of the filter
Here is the 5 micron filter (0.2 isn’t pictured because it was clean like the 5 micron)
After I purged and figured out my loss in yield, I took pentane at 10x (by weight) what was lost and ran it through the CRC media and it took my loss in yield from 25 up to 15% without a sacrifice in quality of end-product. Was happy to ditch 15% for much more palatable slabs
Just a quick heads up. Cotton uses more pesticides than any other industry. I would avoid using them for filtration. look into some of those ptfe bags over at duda diesel or cary company for a much more compatible filter media. I don’t mess with any hydrocarbons besides butane and propane, but the results speak for themselves! well done
Deam nice men
Just added more media. I always went for light yellow so on a 4lb run I’d only use 100-150g of media. On this one it was like 250g for 4lb.
Sounds about right!
What media’s are you running? Noticing any terpene reduction
Just t5 and activated alumina equal parts. And zero terpene loss. I personally think my stuff tastes better run through a small amount of media. But on these clear runs with large amounts of media they still over powered some other trays so I don’t think there was any terp loss even with 200+ grams more media
Are those runs ff or cured? Great work btw.
Do you stack or mix you’re media? Excellent work @Gumby
Is anyone pre soaking their media with only solvent before putting oil/solvent mixture through the column?
A few people are yes. I tried this and then bailed on it. Doesn’t seem to effect yields or quality.
The only reason I could see is if they were trying to avoid channeling, but with a properly packed column channeling should not be an issue
It’s will also help remove any fine particles before running product through
Both very good points.
We pull a vac from the bottom of the crc chamber while we pack. Channeling still can happen tho…
Totally just saw this one.
I’m not using anywhere near that much media.
I’m down to just two media’s now. No celite.
I’m playing with the opaline silica and just t5
@Gumby are you getting the lemon floranotes i read somewhere on here it was coming from the AA im tired of all my strains getting that same smell now its over powering the other “terps” i bake my powders 220 overnight i dont know if my powders are.stored correctly but i get no condensation in my oven i bake , DE b80 aa silica 60 t5 t41)i bought all the powders in the beginnings of the clear.rush) maybe im not baking enough powders to build up the condensation im getting water clear or bright yellow(i think it channels when this happens) but im just curious if youre getting the lemons
I get lemons a lot t5 , silica
I’m convinced it’s just base terps that are heavy
I finally have some strains that dont smell like lemons. But I also cut my powders in half and still got great results. Less lemon more skunk. Who’s to say wasn’t just different strain though
Do I have to use vacuum when I bake my powder? Or will only heat work?
