Seems like butterfly valves would now be a more compelling alternative for low pressure applications.

Yup. Or mixproof if you’ve got the funds.

High(er) pressure stuff is going to be interesting though.

Diaphragm type valves could be good candidates but tend to be $$$$$ and have a pretty substantial pressure drop across them.

… Why do I get the feeling I’m going to be designing valves in the future?

You won’t, not for CLS.

My impression is that the argument at the federal levels gonna look something like “Yeah dog this ain’t a food kitchen.”

On your ethanol system though? Well, you probably should’ve swapped over to butterflies a good while ago tbh.

All that being said, name me a pathogenic organism that does more than simply survive in the environments that regularly exist within your extraction system, and I’ll name my first kid whatever you’d like.

Good thing I don’t play that game.

Nor that one.

I don’t disagree - it’s damn close to impossible for anything to survive most extraction environments.

But “no pathogens” does not necessarily mean “clean”, and I’m more concerned about best practices, industry standards and acceptability in API producing facilities than pathogens.

Proper CIP is important for batch separation and ensuring that a single recall doesn’t kill your company.

Pesticides or some other undesirable slips through quarantine somehow and pops hot in one batch? Your cleaning protocols better be as tight as they come, and you better be able to prove it.

And that means 3A or similar certs on all of your process equipment, riboflavin tests to prove that you’re cleaning the whole surface, and more paperwork than anyone should have to ever think about.

Odds are good that 99% of people who wander through this dumpster fire will never be required by regs to give a shit.

Of course, some of us still like to think about cleanability and such, even if it’s not required by anyone with a clipboard.
