Heating Mantle filler? RBF a little too small for mantle.

Had to buy a new 2L boiling flask. This one is a bit smaller for the 2L heating mantle and is leaving a decent size gap. Any good fillers to use? Foil?

I think sand might work

Put down a couple pieces of foil into the mantle, insert bf, backfill with sand as needed. Much easier to clean this way.

Or just wrap some fireplace rope around the top where the Gap is and call it good

I use foil and fire place rope, all my 5l mantles are bigger than rhe flask. Works just fine

Would guess any type of sand would be good, as it won’t be contacting anything and is only meant to hold thermal heat and act as an insulator. Would probably more evenly distribute heat around the flask and allow for more steady increases in temp.

Has anyone tried this with a large volume discrepancy such as a 5-liter mantle with a 250 or 500 mL flask?

Would love to know the answer to this after fuckin up and buying a 5litre complete setup when we only needed a 500ml one therefore I’ll have a 5lite mantle with a 500ml flask

Put your probe in that gap and then wrap gap and flask with fiberglass rope

500ml Glas Col fabric mantles can be had for cheap. Put it on a stirrer and run with it.

Please just use correct mantle, its a accident waiting to happen what you are trying to do.

Too late ive ordered the wrong size kit , 5 litre instead of 500ml , it’s being delivered tomorow , will the rope be safe enough bro ?

The biggest problem is probably the heater wattage and power output. If you don’t have a variac or proper heating control to turn it down then it might overheat the flask too quickly?

I’ve been told this stops overshoot, can you explain more and why it’s a bad idea?
