These days the terms seems to be used pretty interchangably with other types of extracts so pardon my hair splitting

That type of Hash pictured in @SubstituteCreature photo is made by separating the trichomes from the plant matter, and compressing them together.
There are many ways to skin a cat. The “traditional” method involves dry sift through fine mesh screens, and using a piston or press to compress the powdered material. Sometimes steam would be introduced to adjust the physical structure. Plant-matter contamination would be substantial and extreme differences in quality would depend on factors such as genetics, quality screens, and operator skill.
As cannabis extraction evolved, other methods developed such as bubble hash, which utilizes water and screens(bubble-bags).
Water extraction is much more forgiving than dry-sift, but both face the same dynamic quality factors- as listed earlier.
