Howdy friends, thought I’d post a bit of an update!

We’ve built the first sets of 50’ rows for the farm! After significant hunting around from a bunch of different suppliers, gravel pits, and farms; we built our (hopefully) optimal soil blend for next year. After significant thought we pulled together a blend of fir sawdust, black soil, fish compost, and manure. The natural soil we have onsite (and through most of Vancouver Island) is exceedingly sandy, low nutrient, high drainage.
To counter that the fir dust and high organics helps maintain moisture, and really bring up the nitrogen levels.
We’re planting a bunch of fall rye on the rows (get some roots in the ground), and we’ll likely tilthe it in around January February, and then cover it with tarps). We’re planning on grassing/greening between the rows, for soil health and general nutrients.
We’ve got 12k tulip bulbs en route between a smattering of boutique varietals. As well as dhalias, cosmos, eucalyptus, lavender, zinnias, sunflowers, and a swath of other plants.
We’re up to 13 ducks, and planning on getting more. Ducks are EXCELLENT in gardens/farming for a variety of reasons. They’re great for pest management (they LOVE slugs and insects). They eat weeds. They don’t disturb the soil like chickens do. And… EGGS! We’ll have about a dozen+ eggs per day in spring, and are planning on getting another 30 ducks once we build our ponds. It should represent $5-10k/year in revenue at $6+/dozen.
We’re currently building our irrigation system, and we’re going to integrate a separate pump system for a compost tea, that will use our duck pond water, household scraps, and farm organics, and probably some extra micro nutrients from a couple of our good friends on future
I’ll be getting 4 auto flower plants come spring, or if I was feeling really bored over winter perhaps use some of our lights and grow 2-4 plants myself just for kicks.
We’ve got 2 insulated and plumbed shipping containers purchased from some previous weed growers (because Canadas weed market is in the dumps), and in 2023 were going to use them to grow hydroponic tulips, so that we can retail and wholesale in December for a premium.

Our air BNB is up and running! We’re 45 minutes from Mt. Washington, and we’re both previous high end hoteliers, so we’ve got a lovely little suite for you to come vacation.
We’ve also got our 10 RV campsites finished with power, septic high speed internet and water. For amenities it includes a shower house, bathrooms, and laundry room onsite for our guests. There is a wood fired cedar sauna available for use, and hopefully a hottub soon too
