“The investigation was prompted by two nonfatal opioid overdoses over the past month in which the victims told law enforcement they consumed only gummies sold from a Tobacco Hut that they believed contained Delta-8 THC or CBD, authorities said.”
Damn, would an opiate junkie do that? Lie about the drugs they took? Couldn’t be true.
“We would not have been able to test these items this rapidly without the analytical support and Ionscan technology provided by Lieutenant Colonel Max W. Furman Jr. and his team. Lt. Col. Furman is the Coordinator for the PA Counterdrug Joint Task Force of the Pennsylvanian National Guard.”
Police dept. used Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) for this. I’m not sure the IonScan 600 is equipped for this kind of gummy matrix — definitely could cause some false positives. While police are more likely to be formally trained in sample preparation during drug analysis training, it’s definitely more straightforward (pills, powders, potentially explosive residues, etc).
