We bought a kg of Crystal Resistant CBG Distillate, but after a few months it looks like it has begun to crystalize. It does have high minor cannabinoids, from the companies website “is comprised of at least 20-40% CBG and 17% or more in minor cannabinoids” The CBG had a more consistent viscosity with no noticeable crystals in the distillate the first few months we used it. We have stored it in a cool dry kitchen, under 70-72 degrees. Any help would be appreciated as to why it would start crystalizing after 6 or so months of having it.
Do you have a COA for the distillate? Would you mind separating out some of the crystals and posting a picture of them as well?
Sure thing, I know I have the COA in the kitchen. I’ll post a few photos of the crystals as well. I have a video that maybe helpful too.
Id just re heat the whole lot, homogenize, and it will probably be fine for another few months again.
Thank you. I can’t really see any solids in the second picture. When is the last time you used this batch of distillate? By my experience (at least with d9) when something has been sitting a while and gets oxidized, that oxidized layer can clump or act as a film of sorts, perhaps that is the slurry you were pouring off.
Regardless, I’d recommend following what Aurion suggested, heating and homogenizing. You can always reach out to the producer for a followup as well if you were sold “crystal resistant” distillate that isn’t behaving as it should.
My guess is that agitation over time you created nucleation points for the cbd to start collecting(or maybe CBG based on coa). The whole cbd/cbg blend thing is more “metastable” imo so the more you mess with it the quicker it will eventually fall apart.
My experience with cbd/cbg blend stability is from fresh biomass. The most stable blends were 1:1 cbd/cbg (3:2 fully crystallized after enough time). I have samples from 2022 that are still 90% liquid and a layer of crystals on the bottom of the jar(the jar was never stirred though only rotated and let the disty move around), I never was able to do something compliant though.
I think the suggestion above to re-heat(gently) and homogenize is the correct answer and then try to agitate it as little as possible or maybe re-heat and homogenize whenever your going to work with it to get the longest shelf life.
On a closer look I’m not seeing any crystals form either. to me it looks like it is separating. Thank you very much for your reply and input. It’s much appreciated.
Thank you for the tip! That was my first thought as well but I don’t work with a lot of CBG so I was a little hesitant to just go and try reheat/homogenizing.
What temp would you recommend for homogenizing? I don’t want to over heat and degrade.
To be honest, there shouldn’t be that much agitation, I have only used it about 3 to 4 times since I opened it. I also didn’t heat it up, I poured it into a beaker then warmed the beaker up.
it’s been sitting for the last few months as I was waiting on hardware to fill 1 g disposables.
