im curious what people are using more often in their CRC columns. Is it a powder stack of multiple different powders or an all in one granular media like media bros crx and cry? and why do you prefer one over the other? does wetting the powders take to long or is the ease of just dumping in granular media too easy to resist? is one cheaper in the long run?
Carbon chemistry sells both. We sell significantly more powdered media than granular. That would even remain true if you are include alumina and molecular sieve beads in granular media.
yea i know that im curious as to why people choose one over the other
I used to stack medias, i preffer granular now. Not only efficiency but safety. Less silica to powder to worry about possibly inhaling(although i recommend full face mask). Granular still has silica but its compressed so less silica powder floating around the air.
While powdered CRC has theoretically higher surface area for exchange (excluding ZTC based granulars), I find that it is significantly more prone to creating clogged columns. Even if using DE as a bed on the bottom of the column as a filter, B80 and T41 was a nightmare to deal with in unsaturated runs. Backpressure for days. CRX and CRY are substantially easier to deal with and have far less aerosolized presence when used. That being said, my best results were using a combination of activated carbon powder at the top of a CRC column, with the more granular CRC in the middle/bottom of the column as a pre-filter before DE and a sintered disc.
Wetting never helped. The only thing that truly helped was performing system rinses on a regular basis, and a nice sonication bath with clean EtOH for sintered discs.
I will also note that the methodologies and ratios are definitely solvent dependent.
We’ve had the best luck with a 50/50 mix of pureflo 6000(bleaching clay) and CRYm about 55 grams of each per pound being run for a full polish. So a 50/50 mix of granular and powder on our end.
are any of you employees at a lab? Im asking because if i get hired am I gonna be the smartest one> Ive used various medias but I cant really say what was best because its always a different harvest going in. Media bros was fine? I used the stronger one once on old weed and it made it look white. I usually used the high end shit from best value. As a pro- No clogging. con? I barely smoke oil.
