Cleaning up Butane/Propane

I do not invert the tank I am withdrawing from

We use Gas Innovations Instrument Grade. It took us a few times to clean the remnants, but nowhere near as bad as that one company was using (capital dry ice) out of Citrus Heights, CA. That shit, I swear we distilled it at least 6 times.

Damn, that’s hella cheap, bro. You’re only hitting at around $3.33/lb using cans.

I just got a quote on a half ton of n-butane from Coastal Welding Supply out of Houston. They are hitting at $2.35/lb at that volume.

So, if the tank it upright, you’re either pulling vapor or the tank has a dip tube in it. Is the tank labeled “liquid withdrawal”?

If pulling vapor, all particulates remain in the tank.

If pulling liquid through a dip tube:
A. The interior of the tank has been cleaned perfectly, or
B. The tank has been used and refilled so many times that all particulates have already come out (both difficult propositions), or
C. The tank has been stationary at your site long enough for the particulates to settle and the dip tube has been cut so that it doesn’t reach the bottom of the tank.

Even though many fill plants strive to get perfectly clean tanks, it’s very difficult / impossible to achieve. I’ve been embarrassed with a dirty tank before - maybe on this very thread…

@GasGuy-QEG I am headed over there this morning for dry ice and a another tank swap. I will for sure make some inquiries. I really appreciate the information, as it stands I will continue to distill before using. I feel fortunate to have a place to be able to purchase what seems to be some really clean gas. After reading this thread I would hate to have to distill multiple times as it is a pain in the ass

Exactly man I can’t beat the price and no paper trail . I walk in, give them a 100 dollar bill and walk out lol. My homie works at the distribution center that sells to all the head shops around here in Colorado so he hooks me up at cost and I scratch his back. Next time I distill the case I will take a pic of the collection pot after.

Well shit… They MUST be buying their solvents from Solvent Direct…

@Capttripppp, I don’t know where the hell they get it, but it seems about as clean as the 11x refined canned stuff I used to use when I was guilty of open blasting.

Whoever gas innovations is has some nasty tane

I’m just trying to keep an inside joke going…
But for reals, sounds bitching. I’m still tapping cans, but that is just situational… I HOPE
Edit: Distillation happens no matter the size of the can we tap it from

Good morning Apothecary,

I’m not with Gas Innovations, but have known and done business with them for years. GI is a good company selling good products. The tane they sell comes from Diversified, the best manufacturer on instrument grade hydrocarbons in the US.

If the tane is nasty, the nastiness isn’t coming from the gas. What makes it nasty?

In any event, if you’re buying directly from them - contact them for resolution.

I just squirted about 2 oz of liquid butane from a 100 lb cylinder into a Mason jar and it contained a bunch of black stuff that looked like carbon. I distill my gas, but it was kind of gross to see

I have had this happen even from suppliers that I usually get clean tanks from.

Got a 60lber of nbutane a few months ago that was insane…

I just distilled a 22lb blend from @GasGuy-QEG and it was one of the cleanest tanks of gas I have ever distilled.

An interesting read to this point and I thought I would add two more cents.

My experience with lighter butane is that it has more mystery oil content than 99.95% Instrument Grade and varies considerably more batch to batch.

I’ve found that 99.95% pure and 99.99% pure LPG comes out of the same tank, you are just paying for additional tests and paperwork, as Instrument Grade from Apis Labs in Eugene actually measured 99.99%.

After distillation, our tests showed Instrument Grade to be 99.998% pure with regard to molecules longer than C-4. Distilling 48 lbs of Instrument Grade left a light film on the bottom and walls of the collection vessel, but no droplets.

Some users pull vapor from their tanks instead of liquid, and leave the residue in the tank. As has been noted, it isn’t possible to reliably clean the interior of the tank once it is returned for refill, so one solution is to lease/own your own bottles that are being recycled, so as to take control of that variable.

Because things can still go wrong, go wrong, go wrong…in is yet another reason for pre-distilling the LPG before using it for an extract. If you receive dirty gas, you will immediately know it, before it presents a problem.

To add a point, lighter fuel suppliers change their formulas depending on season and local, adding yet another variable if you choose to use them.

“Food Grade” is just a marketing term usually reserved for the small refill cans. It’s just aerosol or refrigerant grade normal/iso/propane.

@Graywolf - if it isnt very clean does it get clean in 1 distillation? Have you found what mystery oil is other than refrigerant oil?

Use Ignitus brand butane? - #9 by SkyHighLer

Depends on how dirty and your process. Pentane 's boils at around 97F under atmospheric pressure, but its flash point is 57F, so there can be some carry over in the low PPM even at 85F. Especially if your process is under less than atmospheric pressure, so that Pentanes bp is even lower.

If you want to remove it in a single pass, you can polish it with a Vici Metronics gas polishing filter.

Our analysis of mystery oil showed it to be a mixture of longer chain alkanes in the low ppm range and as well as a few green alligator and long neck geese contaminants in the low PPM and the PPB range.
