Chemist/Quality Specialist looking for lab lead/management opportunities

Hello,

I am currently a Senior QA/QC Chemist working for a sustainable health and beauty ingredient manufacturer. Our products include renewable fuels, lubricants, and cosmetics. My current duties include analyzing raw material, in-process, and final product samples according to established SOP’s. I am involved with analytical method troubleshooting and development. In addition to these duties, I also perform process development/research and development duties involving lab scale organic/organometallic reactions. In my R&D/PD role I have been responsible for designing and building glassware apparatuses, for the purposes of distillation, purification, and synthesis. My experience in the chemical industry has also included use of much of the processing equipment used in the cannabis industry, including rotary evaporators, closed loop systems for purification and extraction, a variety of filtration apparatuses, and distillation systems. I am also responsible for the maintenance and repair of analytical instrumentation. As the facility’s Senior QA/QC Chemist, I am second in command to the QC/Lab Manager. As such, I often perform managerial duties while the manager is out. Over the years I have trained many fresh lab tech and chemists who are no fully capable of understanding and completing all laboratory tasks. I have been intimately involved in the creation and building of quality systems, including writing SOPs that adhere to federal and state regulations, and GMP/GLP.

My past experience includes working in a GMP environment for a FDA regulated pharmaceuticals and cosmetics manufacturer. My duties included analyzing raw material, in-process, and final product samples as well as conducting stability testing and complaint investigations. I have extensive experience performing HPLC purity assays including samples with multiple actives. I also have a great deal of experience with FTIR, UV/VIS, RI, LOD, and wet chemistry as well as many other basic laboratory techniques. In addition to these duties, I was also responsible for the calibration maintenance and repair of laboratory instrumentation as well as data review, disposition and release of raw materials and final product.

I am posting here in hopes of finding opportunities and gaining connections in the industry. find my past experience, below.

Beautiful resume good luck with your search buddy

I find it extremely hard to find long term places as an experienced chemist/engineer.

Make sure you don’t ever cheat yourself on your expected salary, alot of these larger companies will oogle your eyes with bonuses for stock and ownership that never really pan out.

Market is full of snakes, trying to get knowledge for the cheapest price.

Where are you located, and where are you willing and able to relocate to, if anywhere?

What specifically are you looking for in cannabis? With your experience, maybe consider starting your own business. I have similar experience as you, and anecdotally many cannabis companies aren’t going to know how to use you effectively. Lots of these companies promise the sky and beyond only to find yourself packing an extraction vessel and running a machine. Lots of business owners who are insecure and will be intimidated by how much knowledge you have over them. If you are looking to do actual chemistry work, in GMP environments you are accustomed to, I think you may be sorely disappointed. Its not uncommon to go through multiple startups, doing maybe 6 months at each one, for various reasons beyond your control. I’ve been burned several times, which is ultimately why I left the cannabis space. But in time I think it will get better. So my advice, consider looking into starting your own business

You will be sought after, be pushy get yours. that much experience in testing and hydrogenation… Im sure you can make someone a very happy owner and they should reciprocate. best of luck

What @IonStorm stated mimics my experience very much.

Executives get super insecure once they see you know how to get to the $ quicker than them.
They’re always worried about themselves getting fucked over, so they OCD and limit your growth ability greatly.

The second they see your potential, you’ll get stopped short.

This industry is full of wannabe gangsters, all trying to use knowledge to level themselves up.

Contracts/agreements in the cannabis/hemp arena are very hard to hold up, as litigation is basically the only option for enforcement and costs silly $ to actually follow through with, without even knowing if its worth it…

I’d really recommend against the production (growing/extraction) side of the industry. Better off going for the analytical testing side. More professional… But you’d still be surprised. Maybe just shotgun email a bunch of labs, they are always needing talent but not allways have the time to look. Best of luck amigo.

Best of luck on your search and I’ll put my ear to the ground for you as well.:v:

With your experience you’d be wasted at 99% of cannabis extraction outfits in the US. Lack of meaningful regulation is the only thing keeping most of these companies alive and operating.

You should really be looking for a financier rather than company to work for.

As a PhD chemist who struggled to find a job in the industry for years… if someone wants a noncompete tell them to fuck all of the way off. The law of inevitable discovery likely covers 99% of what you’ll deal with and they’ve just got a retainer and an itchy attorney and willing to make your life hell when they fuck up.

Much appreciated.

I’m in southeast North Carolina now. But, willing to relocate for the right opportunity.

Thanks for the info. I’m really looking to manage/run either a production or analytical lab. In my experience what you have described is the norm for most industries.
