Can I Use Vacuum with Syringe Filter Like This Instead of Hand Pressure?

Hi everyone,
I’ve been filtering oils using 50ml syringes and syringe filters, but pushing thick or winterized solutions through them by hand is tiring.

So I came up with this setup (image below):

My questions:

  1. Can vacuum suction damage syringe filters or reduce filtering quality?
  2. Has anyone else tried this setup before? Any tips or warnings?
  3. Is there a better way to automate or improve this? (For small-scale home use, not bulk operations)

Well at sea level full absolute vacuum will give you -14.7 PSI is that enough to do what you need it to do (most vacuum pumps are not going to give that much vacuum so you’re looking at less than -14.7 PSI)? Also what solvent are you trying to filter? Some solvents are pain in the ass to pull through filter but not a big deal to push through a filter. the deeper the vacuum the lower the boiling temperature of your solvent and it’s one thing to boil it off in your flask it’s another thing when it boils off on your filter and clogs it up.

Mixture of ethanol and crude oil (Winterization).
I know a coffee filter might be enough, but I’m thinking about using under 1-micron filtration with these syringes.

Ditch the syringe and just use a Buchner setup

Yeah go with what he just said. Seems to me like you’re over complicating a simple problem.

Unless you are removing bacteria the syringe filters are completely unnecessary
