Butane Contaminant Demystified

I’m building a water wash test skid and using it for automation testing, amine remediation testing, and alcohol louching. It should be functional in about 2 weeks.

Good! Where are you located? Who is doing your LPG lab work?

I’m located in Schaumburg, IL. I haven’t committed to a testing company yet, but I’m leaning towards Intertek.

What ever happened to the paper being released for us all to review the findings?

Don’t need any of that anyway.

I think water washing is going to be the move. I’m also excited about @Graywolf and the Molesieve columns.

Stuck in political BS limbo. Not my information to publish unfortunately though it is still an active goal being worked towards. Tried a new supplier out of necessity. My quick crash has stopped in the last week and instead I am now seeing acetone in my HTE which I don’t even have in the building. At least stuff is crystallising normally though for the first time in a long time.

After attending the Medusa Diamond roundtable discussion us’ns have done some scheming and the ball is starting to roll.

As has been noted, we have brothers constructing water wash systems, and some pursuing gas scrubbing cartridges to remediate the problem. I’m directly involved with arranging for scrubbing cartridge testing in concert with Duke Johnson and Dred Pirate.

Vici Metronics has agreed to supply standard test cartridges pro bono and analyze them upon their return for refinement to our specific needs.

Alas and alack, Specialty Analytical will not be available this time for testing. They are who I used for the original Mystery Oil investigation but begged off this time due to lack of capacity. I am currently seeking an alternative with the equipment and standards, preferably locally so we can easily transport samples.

I’ve also made overtures to a gas supplier soliciting their participation in both the discovery and remediation portion of the project. More on that as it progresses.

Water washing sounds particularly interesting in that it may also be a means to reduce the terpene load in recycled LPG, another industry enigma/opportunity. I am personally watching the water wash with bait on mah breath.

I tried a CRC column packed with that plus carbon and 13x and distilled the gas and also passed through the 13x on the vapor end and didn’t help at all. Looking at 8oz of diamond sugar that started crashing within hours. One of the runs, I didn’t pour as wet as usual, and it turned to sugar before my eyes. The grower sprays Zerotol and I’m not sure if that’s making things worse.
I just dumped the last 18lbs of hydrocarbons and distilling a fresh 120# tank this week. I’m hoping its better than the last stuff. Gonna clean out my holding tanks also.

I’m telling you it’s all hype to sell more CC media

Certainly how it felt waiting for the tank COAs he was supposed to send me…

It’s something to try. It’s been effective for most but as it is but the idea fix, it can’t every get rid of the problem 100%. CC has been clear about that and just had a whole event where the takeaway was water washing.

Everyone wants to see the paper!

Well shit, do we change the topic title?

Once upon a time I did some mist washing…

If one removes the contaminant thusly, does that make it de-mistified?

Well, when you put it like that . . . .

I think folks are doing the best they can to figure out what is a rotten mess for extractors. I trust @Photon_noir when he says that water washing is the most effective. The feedback we got in Eugene was that the gas filtration had solved it for some people. I sure wish it was 100%. The majority of the conversation at the event was about @Dred_pirate 's water wash skid. We spent waaaaay more time talking about that, which is more effective than the media filtration.

We’ve found scrubbing with alumina while filling, keeping the gas as dry as possible, and not stacking runs in the pot has helped immensely.

The “dry as possible” part means we re-charge our mole sieve every other day. Probably provides a clue as to why water washing is the most effective at complete removal.
