Bhogarts ice tech. Who makes something better for less?

Whats the best way to chill the mvp150? We already have the mvp150 alongside the bhogart ice tech, but I’m about to buy another mvp and was looking for something better but cheaper than another buttfuck ice tech…anyone got any ideas? :blush:

Honestly, your best bet is a walk in condenser skid DX’d through a plate exchanger IMO. Something like this:

When I went to see a demo and they had to stop recovering to loop the collection threw again because of blow bye with one pump I left. :man_shrugging:

I’m currently running a touchscience DSLB 300/80. I believe it was ~$25K landed.

It is almost up for the task of keeping a four column 6x48” system at temp during recovery…it is NOT up for cooling two such rigs at the same time, and frankly THREE of the damn things would be a better match (and for some reason I had it in my that there were supposed to be three…)

Mind you, using a -80C chiller to pull the heat added in the evaporator & by the pump strikes me as poor resource allocation…10tons at -10C would do a better job AND be cheaper…

Edit: …and we’ve swapped both compressors and added a couple of lbs of isobutane (per touchscience) to get it working…

This is fairly new to you guys right? You’ve already changed 2 compressors? This has me concerned the dlsb’s I’ll be working with will be just as big of a piece of shit as you’re describing.

With that math wouldn’t - 60 be good enough for one of those 6×48 rigs?

Not sure how long it was in service before the first compressor needed swapped (came from an ETOH/Hemp facility). Was only running for a week (not continuous either) before the second compressor seized. Might have two weeks on it since then…

Gets to -15C when I hammer on both systems at once.

Historically I’ve seen a 20-30% early failure/DOA on the DSLB’s. So we just have an HVAC guy on call…once they’re working they seem to do OK.

Really need to up my game and learn how to roll my own…

Don’t know how much Iced tech is costing these days but from Bhogart it’s undoubtedly a ripoff with dogshit customer service to boot.

I’ve had good luck with our Fluid Chillers AIR20000 though we are using it in a different application to cool ethanol.

I can certainly get the job done. Just not in the manner the boss claimed I’d be able to/wants me to. For that I’d need three.

It’s a whole bunch of chiller…but it’s still not gonna pull both systems to -60C and hold them once pumps are involved.

Now that this has been unequivocally demonstrated to the boss, I just need to adapt how we run to match our available heating and cooling capabilities.

paid 15k for the iced tech a few months ago from bhogart. It is a ripoff for what it is, but it works well…I was just seeing if there was anything else out there that did the same thing for cheaper. I may just have to get another buttfuck tech

Let me know when you need a lesson, they’re not much more complicated than a CLS

Here’s my short explanation of how to use the above skid for a DX discharge chiller:

"You would just hook a big brazed plate heat exchanger (like the kind they sell at duda diesel) to the discharge of your pump.

On the other pass of the heat exchanger, hook one side to the liquid accumulator on that skid using type K copper (I recommend welding a compression adapter to the heat exchanger because NPT threads almost always leak in refrigerant systems). On the other side of the heat exchanger, connect back to the suction side of the condenser skid.

You can take a small line teed off after the BPHE and wrap it around the pump head to cool the pump head directly if need be but honestly a kiddie pool cooling tower type setup is probably better for that task.

Last thing is to install a TXV between the liquid accumulator and BPHE on the refrigerant circuit (they’re like $60), I can size one for the unit if you decide to go the route. After that you’ll need to charge it, I can walk you through that as well if you decide to go this route.

FYI, this won’t hit -80c, it might kiss -40C but it’s a lot cheaper than $25k. Any decent HVACR tech could do most of the work in a short day or so."

Amazon has some of the duda diesel plate exchangers for about half the cost

I just bought 4 of these for my FFE

I believe this one has 4 m2 surface area

There’s more to it than that. Which is exactly why Iced Tech is shit. (Just saw your next , more detailed post - will read and update this text when not driving). Long story short - it needs more controls or continuous load so you don’t kill your compressors.

Correct, there is absolutely more to a commercial chiller than that condenser skid and a heat exchanger. For starters, this is just a single stage system. That being said, it will run with pretty much just what was mentioned. It’s not often anyone trying to hit -40C has a problem with loading enough to get oil flow. If anyone wants the how-to on how to build a brick shithouse of a cascade chiller for a lot less than $25k, I think I left it lying around somewhere here…
