Better Flange SPD - Stainless Steel Short path systems

It’s always a privilege to step foot in someone’s lab and use their table space. Even more massive privilege when that lab and table space are set up like this. All credit to @Permeable_Solutions/@Daddy_distillates for having such a clean distillation station

Displayed here is a glass version of the head distilling some hemp oil. This video is during the transition state in the heads and mains fractions. There is a large amount of popping in the flask which can cause crude to splash into the head and condenser.

The temperature of head is also not equalized with the flask, making this the perfect time to display liquid rejection and splash rejection capabilities of this design

Here is an image of the head at the end of the run

We do have glass if people want it and can still bring the same kf25 design, though it is more expensive

I just got the v3 internal column in

New features include more girth which allows for a lot more surface area open in the column. This will speed us up for the large 10L-20L sized runs but we will likely go even wider if this works well

Hoping to get some good test runs in the coming weeks at the 5L scale but I will have to wait a month until my larger 10L flask arrives. In the meantime we’ll probably try fully loading a 5L flask with like 4.5L of first pass just to test the speed with a lot of material in the flask

Two more heads ready to go. One of these is spoken for but the other is available without lead time!

The customer feedback i’ve gotten has been good so far. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions

what type of clamp do these use . very cool product!

The smaller flanges use the kf25 and kf40 clamps, and the largest flange is a NW80 which uses jaw style clamps.

What type of joints do the receiving flasks use?

The joints are all kf25 in the receiving flasks. They are no longer the welded version shown in the most recent post above. We’ve moved to an all-glass flange shown in this picture. I have them custom made in California

not so bad BUT I would add some insert with plates to increase surface area to create more reflux and better separation as a result - this unit does not really differs from my Grandpa’s old moonshine unit;) just larger in diameter. Can we have a blueprint with side cut to understand the flow and theoretical plates work? thx

edit: My bad, I see the insert as a reflux surface with holes as a cut outs to let the clear vapes out - but still need a drawing to see the surface area and do some calculations.

You don’t need a chiller or recirc pump. I was singing along at 1L/hr with it just dumping heat into the air from the condenser. The thing is legit!

Whoops, I responded to the right person, just the wrong post!

Running a demo of a terpene distillation today in Oakland. Here’s the setup on a 4 ft table.

That’s the 5L right?

understood, basically best output per hour so far on the market compared to glass ones, even with kf25’s like mine still super slow output rate

So I have since found out that when running 3L through my 5L system, that the increased run time causes the rest of the system to heat up quite hot. It’s generally not a big deal until later in the run where kf tubing just before the cold trap starts to get hot. We have since implemented a simple desk fan that can be pointed towards the parts after the condenser when they start getting hot to the touch. In 5 or so minutes they cool back down and it’s fine.

Curious how hot the 10 & 20L systems get if that’s the case.

Also how’s your pump handling it? If it’s that hot all the way to the trap the thermal load on that trap would be significant. With only one trap that seems like it would be hard on the pump

Could you make a peltier junction that will generate enough voltage to drive a pc fan when it gets too hot?

…Or signal a relay to switch if the Peltier doesn’t generate enough juice.

Pump chugs right along. I’m rocking a pair of Alcatel 2021i’s that I alternate between on runs to load balance, but I swear they thrive on neglect and abuse. When we realized it was getting hot up to the cold trap, we started spraying water on it and it was instantly boiling off. We still had ice in the trap so it wasn’t actually going to heat up the pump but after implementing the fan, we are in good shape!

If someone wanted to get that fancy, probably. It would be neat, but our fan draws less than 60w, and it’s easier to just plug it into the wall. We are a bit obsessive when it comes to SPD runs and consistently check it every 5-10min to make sure something hasn’t gone fucky. It was super common to come back to vac leaks and other problems when we were running glass. Nowadays when we check the system during a run it’s always “yep, she’s running, alls good!” But we got conditioned from the glass to be super anal about making sure everything is cool.
