Best Way To Isolate THCV From A Distillate?

Hi, I have some distillate with ~10% THCV and 60% CBD. I’d like to isolate the THCV and still keep the THCV and residual distillate saleable. What would be the best way to approach this?

We have a production facility and can rent additional space. The exact equipment, personnel and economies of scale are something I need to budget for and understand better. For example, do we just need to purchase a $50k automated flash chromatography setup and hire a qualified organic chemist - or could it all not work anyway?

Chromatography is one way to do it. Can I ask if you have runs TLC plate and verified that you can actually separate it? It’s basically the same molecule and will run the same way on silica and C18.

We haven’t, we don’t have a TLC

see if you cant distill the whole mess, then recrystallise the cbd. afterword you can wash the cbd isolate with some solvent to get all the mother liquor off from crystallisation. from there you can continue your work up via chromatography. it will be a much smaller scale that you have to work on by removing the bulk of the cbd before chromatography some tlc tests like @anon93688 mentioned you can determine your mobile phases from there.

i only mention thin-layer chromatography because it is the cheapest method to separate compounds. If you can separate things on TLC, you can do it on an actual column. Heck, you don’t even need a column. You could do prep TLC and get your stuff of off the TLC plate.

If you want to distill, you would need to use a long vigreux column to help with separation.

You can PM me and we can discuss TLC and other chromatography options.

30 dollars in silica 60 200-400 mesh on amazon, Dry Column Vacuum Chromatography might be able to help you can get great resolution between fractions if you run it through a couple times might be a great way to isolate it

If you do isolate the THCV we’d be interested in buying it.

Is distilation a realistic way to separate cannabinoids? I’ve run short path and have considered adding a jacketed vigreau.
Could one remediate this way?

That’s what they do in big Oil. Run three story tall vigreux and separate everything out of crude oil.

That isn’t a very short path. It seems biotage or similar is the best way.

If you are going to do this regularly and thin Plate LC shows separation, prep scale LC is a likely process.
It is hard to get more than five theoretical plates in a packed column in a lab and easy to get 10,000 theoretical plates in a decent scale prep LC setup.
I think a lab that masters LC tech will be able to do good business as all of the cannabinoid compounds come into commercial demand.

Looking to do the same with our current distillate. Sitting at around 6.5%. If we dumped some of the CBD out of it we could increase it and limit the potential for crystallization. Looking for labs that would be willing to do a second pass and process this for us.
