B80 tips for sugar sauce runs on machine trim. 1st b80 run

What do you think about this:
From bottom to top
3 um disc
Filter stack with 3 um filter paper with filter ring on the first perforated plate (in the middle of the stack)
20 um filter with ring and perf plate above the 3 um in the same filer stack
Add column
Pack b80 on the 20 um filter and pack biomass on top of the b80.

When I spoke to oss they advised me to cut a 3um filer paper to fit on top of sintered filter, pack b80 on top of that and pack it well. Then normal filter stack above that. This seems opposite of what you are doing.

I edited my steps, I did forget to put the stack in my setup.

But really, the oss steps and mine are somewhat similar, you are using the sintered discs as the last line of defense in both my setup and how oss described it.

As far as that working, I’d think it would be ok, the one thing I see that could be an issue is going from 20-3 with no steps between. If you have some powders getting through the 20um paper it could clog the 3um paper pretty fast.

You could mitigate that somewhat by sticking some cotton balls in your filter stack above the paper filter. @Photon_noir did explain that a layer of something like cotton swabs will help catch particulates.

The difference between the oss tek and yours is that they fill
The sintered disk stack with media. The 3 um paper is directly on the 3 um sintered filter with b80 immediately on top of that. The issue I have with that one (besides ignoring an entire filter stack for pre filtration) is it leaves a gap btween My sintered stack (filled level to the top with b80) and the bottom filter of the next stack. My filter stacks bottom filter is welded in the middle of the stack. Not on the bottom so it leaves a gap between it and what’s below.

Im thinking material over b80 over 20 over cotton over 3 over another 3 on top of sintered 3 sounds like my best option.

Would love feedback on that idea

Maybe I’ll add cotton on top of the 3 um that’s on the sintered filter to keep it held in place as well.

Ahh, I see what your saying, yeah that 20um screen isn’t being supported in the oss setup. Yeah that’s a little funky.

One thing to note, sometimes some of us over think this.

Some members use the sintered plate with papers on top, attach that to their material spool, throw powders then materials in and go.

That’s the sintered filter, the filter stack with 1 ring and then the filter stack with both rings. The filters are supported with perf plates

But you can see the gap between the top of the sintered and the first perf plate on the filter stack.

I’ve definitely been guilty of over thinking this stuff. Don’t want to fuck up. New to this equipment and techniques. Dont want anyone to lose money or get anyone hurt with my negligence

Over thinking when your fresh is a curse and a blessing.
I wouldnt change it. Youll learn more

Ugh, I get stuck thinking about the actual discs like I have.

If you have fast and med filter papers, pop in your first ring above the plate, drop in the perforated plate, put two filters papers on top, then put your last ring down, securing the filter papers.

Then attach to your spool, pack powders, materials and you’re good.

Run 2 papers to insure a good seal around the ring and your g2g

I have Ashless quantitative filter paper… not sure if it’s fast or not. Seems to be

But think the first pic is the sintered filter you have

Tbh, it’s not a huge deal, just use two

Ok once over with the new info, and thank you guys for all your help!

From bottom sintered disk stack.
3 um paper directly on sintered filter
Fill sintered stack with cotton balls to hold 3 um paper in place (as rings don’t fit for some reason)
Next stack is filter stack
Bottom perf plate
Retaining ring with no filter
Next perf plate
Filter ring with 20 and 3 um ? Or 2 3um filters?

No worries about cotton between 20 and 3?

Just put your stack together like I showed you and put it under your spool. That’s all you’ll need.

That 20um is kind worthless without a support plate for this.

Sorry I got confused, I kept thinking of this kind of disc lol

Just like this, only with your big boy size stuff!

Hopefully the pics clear things up for you, I’m a visual guy (dummy) and they help me a ton.

Ok. Easy enough. So 2 3um filters and no 20 ?

No 20, put it away for now. You’ll be fine!
