Hello everyone. I just wanted to start a discussion about the safety of terpenes and inhalation.
First off the simple answer is nobody knows. There is nothing the fda approves as being safe to vaporize and inhale. The best thing to inhale is just air itself. But we understand that consumers have the option to choose for themselves what they want to inhale.
The whole theory behind terpene inhalation is that we, as a species have been inhaling terpenes through smoking cannabis for who knows how long with little to no ramification other than the legal side. So the idea is to minimize the risk as much as possible if one decides to inhale other products.
You see terpenes are found in cannabis at a ratio of about 1-5% of the total weight of the plant. So as long as we are only adding 1-5% back into disty vape pens then we are staying within the natural scope of the plant. This is why our companies terpenes are so concentrated. Because we only want you to use what’s naturally inside the plant.
Terpenes companies that suggest 10-15% are literally putting you at a higher risk because we don’t know what the long term effects are. It might seem nice to use a diluted terpene because then you don’t have to use pg or mct as a liquefier. But using that amount could have unknown consequences.
Here is the thing with pg and mct. Pg has been around since the 40s and is GRAS. Even inhalation has minimal effects. If you have ever been to a concert. The fog in the air for the lights is pg.
Now think about the ecig market. People who blew those big clouds are consuming roughly 5-10 grams of pg/peg/vg per day. Now that sounds unsafe, but when you think about disty pens, most of the time it’s 2-5% terps, 5-10% pg/mct oil and the rest is concentrates.
In order to consume what a ecig vaporizer inhales you would need to vape 50-100 pens per day. As most people consume a 1g pen in anywhere from 2-7 days, you can see how minimally you are consuming those products which have been vaped for years.
So ditch the pg/mct stigma, and quit over terping you pens lol
I may be wrong but I feel like this topic is highly redundant around here as of late. Lots of threads to dig through if you’d like to get an idea of general consensus or opinions/perspectives
I think plant botanical terps may be for sure.
I’ll be the first to say I think NON Canna or hemp terps probably aren’t gonna be as bad for some weird reasoning
But! Everytime I vape botanical terps I get throat irritations and lungs feeling raw. I spit stuff like crazy too… Botanical terps(non Canna or hemp) got CLAWS! Don’t know why, can’t explain more than that. Maybe other ppl notice the same things.
Canna terps or hemp terps just ain’t doing that. I even mixed the same ratios. Probably in my head but everyone I know was telling me the plant terps just couldn’t be held and hurt
After reading back through I will openly admit that I only experience the bad effect from plant terps when was at higher 10-15%, but was recommended by the company I thought.
You may be right about that for sure, 5% only wouldn’t cause the same irritations to me
I’m no fan of plant terps either but I did notice that
In my experience the harshness with botanical terps depends on the flavor. Lemon seems to pinch more so than my candy terps… Sounds to me like the future is terp sauce.
I used to be able to get distillate 99% pure and I liked it very much. It had a chemical taste but straight thc seemed to work really well medicinally without the tiredness of a typical indica strain. Its more of a high energy high. Now d-line adds terpenes to everything and yeah it taste more like pot, but its weaker and in many ways the terpenes usually promote sleepiness. Scientist have found that heating terpenes releases harmful chemicals such as benzene. However, the thc alone tests safer. Please can someone else find these studies im talking about and post links. It seems 99% pure thc distillate is the safest product to dab and yet no one is selling it in MA without terpenes added. At least give consumers the option of pure thc.
