Just a quick inquiry. Haven’t ran my spd since last season… and I remember always chasing stupid leaks and such, but also remember I had tons of hoses and connections cobbled together from parts I had. Just wanted to know if you see any particular issues with this setup. The Welch pump uses a different thread for its ports, I believe “machine thread”. It comes with the barb on the intake, so I’m going to see if I can find a new part coming out of the intake that’s npt and get rid of that little piece of hose, but for now it minimizes hoses and clamps and problematic connections. I can definitely buy new parts and such but I try and use what I have laying around. The brass piece is where I connect my vacuum guage, and the braided hose will eventually have a barb at the other end to connect to a small piece of gum rubber going to my cow. I assume since that braided hose is used for cls that it’s definitely air tight. So, aside from buying more appropriate connectors, any reason why this won’t be a good setup for now?
Yup, that first connection with the hose coming off the top of the pump. That’s not gonna work.
Are you referring to the vinyl hose coming right of the pump or the flared metal hose at the very top? With the hose clamps it should remain tight, although that is the piece I was talking about needs a special “machine threaded” piece. I’m going to try find a npt fitting that can fit in there to remove all vinyl hoses and hose clamps. Anything else?
Up that’s the part I’m afraid will collapse under vacuum, but it’s a short piece so it might survive temporarily
I’ve used that type of hose before, in the last cobbled together leak mania. The hose itself doesn’t collapse, and actually inside of that hose the two barbs meet so it actually can’t collapse. I just needed a way to get from the pump to the rest of my setup since the welch came with a barbed end that has the special threading. I 100% want to remove that hose and try and find a replacement piece to come out of the pump to an npt fitting snd just union it to the next piece. Any issue with the braided hose going to a barb and then gum rubber to the glass cow
That clear braided hose will work fine. My setup uses the same hose from cold trap to pump inlet. Why not find the thread size/pitch for the welch and throw a kf25 flange on there to clean it up a little? You could set it up 1000 different ways but here’s an idea.
That’s basically what I want to do, I just like to use what I have in hand when possible. The main annoyance is that the Welch doesn’t use normal npt threading because… why the fuck would it right? If you saw the last setup I had youd understand why I chased leaks half my day. It was one of those silly things that you suffer with because you never step back for a minute and say “how can I make this better” lol. Sometimes you get so wrapped up in work you don’t address simple fixes to make life better. Minus the sloppy look of that vinyl hose, these are all npt /jic fittings and should eliminate most points of leakage. Thanks guys
just figured you might spot something that I would realize.
Because its known that npt threads are not the best at keeping vacuum vs a flat faced sealing surface that you find with most vacuum pumps or kf fittings for example. See how there is a oring on that flat surface that seals against the pump?
Edit: added link to proper fitting.

That’s perfect. Thank you!
I may have one of these if your looking for one.
I noticed for the Welch 1400 that piece is like $160… I’m going to see if I can find other parts that will fit with that proper threading and flat bottom and just find the appropriate parts. My setup as is now seems fine minus the ugly vinyl hose. I don’t know if I wanna drop $160 bucks right now to clean that up. Although I am anal about things sometimes, I can probably just find an appropriately threaded part and figure out the connections myself
I also have a TON of tubing, vac lines, coolant lines, spare glass. 3 tubs of stuff.
If you have any parts that I can use to come out of the pump with that threading and flat bottom I’d be interested. Certainly don’t want to low ball you though, I just don’t need to spend near $200 at the moment to remedy that ugly barb to barb deal lol
I think I paid 40.00 or so. May have came from @Killa12345
I’ll dm you pics of what I have for ya about 8pm.
Ah… silly me. Forgot to even holla at Killa. I’m gonna put together a little shopping list of things I need and hit up the king himself
