So this is the second time I had a tr21 / trs21 do this exact thing. Out of no where randomly, it just starts blasting my gas out of the hole on the bottom. The first time it happened was on the trs21. We ordered a valve rebuild kit and changed out everything it came with, and put that pump to the side. Started using the back up tr21 for a few months and today the same. went to test the old pump with the rebuild kit and it didn’t work (we never tested after the rebuild). My question is seeing as 2 of these pumps failed in the same way, is there a way to fix this? Do I need some other rebuild kit? Any experiences like this?
Ps. I know these pumps aren’t great but I’m trying to avoid a few thousand dollar replacement :(. I uploaded a pic of the bottom hole where the gas comes out
Well… these are a fairy widely used pump for this type of job. Not saying it’s the best, but I’ve never been under the impression that this is a disastrous choice either. The first machine I ever learned on ran these pump… and the setup that I was given to work with had these pumps. They worked for me for over a year with only these 2valve failures. Not saying you’re wrong by any means, infact I always take a way something from people’s advice. But again, I’ve never been under the impression that these are the worst most dangerous pumps to use…
Again. To avoid the “fine don’t listen man”, I am fully absorbing what you said and also hope to hear more about it! I’m not arguing you, just surprised I never knew this
Have you replaced the pistons and cylinders? The gas could either be bleeding past the piston rings or the o-ring where the cylinder seals to the valve block. I rebuild these pretty often, that’s where I would start. Also, those aren’t expensive pumps but they are marketed as ignition/spark proof.
No… my partner did the valve replacements which was basically just o rings/seals etc but we did not spring for the piston/full rebuild kit. It runs about 340 for the rebuild kit, my parter suggested I just look for a new better pump. Hoping to find a good used/rebuilt pump. Hoping maybe someone here can point me in a good direction. There’s a few places around me that repair and often sell rebuilt pumps so im going to check that out. I remember when shopping for vacuum pumps a lot of people suggested looking for clean used ones as the discounts can be pretty significant. But alas, I’m on the rush to find a new pump and get back to work
of the tr2?? well hot damn haha. Both systems ive worked with were fairly small so the 1 pump always did the trick. Looking to grab a cmep ol as a small upgrade. Seems to be the only middle ground pump for the price range.
The cmep is a good intermediate but it sucks to rebuild. The seals used are felt and the rebuild process takes special care. The cmep is a good pump but the rebuild is very finicky.
It needs a full rebuild kit. $350 I believe. Ive had to rebuild those quite a bit when I was using them. Same problem you were having…gas leaking from the bottom. Those cylinders/piston heads go out at around 200hrs
Im actually having the same exact problem. Leaking at the bottom of the housing in the front on the pump. Haven’t figured out how to remove the pistons. How we’re you able to remove the pistons? Im still having trouble just removing that front plate. Does it just pop off? Or is there a screw somewhere im missing?
Im not very familiar with it. So ive never really given it consideration. Plus not really interested in having to go fill tanks on the regular basis. Just another expense plus time
So. To take off that front plate, (I’m going off memory) I think there’s easily accessible screws for that front plate, I think. BUT the key here is, if you look inside that little hole where the leak is on the bottom of the pump, look inside with a light, and there are two tiny hex/Allen key screws that hold that front part together. My first mistake was forcing that front plate off not knowing about those. So… take those two little screws off. Pry the front off. And that should give you access inside where everything should slide off the main rod. (You have to take the top pump head piece off as well). It’s really easy actually and I learned how to do it. If you need further help dm me
That is a good source to follow for cleaning… but if he needs to change the pistons which is sounds like he does, he needs to take the front off. And I had a real hard time finding that documentation. Called companies etc. but yea sounds like a piston replacement.
Those Allen bolts that you have to reach through the little hole are the key and no one ever told me about them and nothing online mentioned it. So there ya go
