Why would there be a traffic checkpoint in the middle of nowhere, North of a truck stop town?
I would guess they were looking for someone in particular, based on a tip. The supreme court has ruled that drug checkpoints are unconstitutional, but safety checkpoints for seat belt or dui are ok. So they have to pretend.
Fun fact, putting up a sign that says “drug checkpoint ahead” and then pulling over cars that exit the highway when they see the sign is not unconstitutional. They call that good police work.
