If you don’t figure it out today can I take call with you about it tomorrow (no charge)? I have some ideas but can’t write much today

You should also TLC your reaction mixture. This will give you more information about the reaction than anyone of us on here can provide you.

I didn’t activate it correctly this is good to know. 12 hrs or 8?

Is water integral to the reaction in any way?

Does the patent you read specify whether p tosic acid needs to be anhydrous for the reaction to take place?

Also you will probably want to be on the safe side and bake your sieve beads under vacuum for 12 hours.

88°C?! If you are not using a solvent, that could be part of the problem. The ptosic you are using is a monohydrate, so yes, there should be a little water present. The 4Å beads may be inhibiting the acid’s activity, but a lack of solvent is more likely the problematic factor.
