Why would I add water?

Winterizing with 190 denatured

Things to avoid due to excessive lipophylicity are: Isopropyl alcohol and its azeotrope unless doing very specific things with it, usually in small batches. 200 proof ethanol Heptane (especially mixed isomers) denatured ethanol without water. Things to use instead: 190 proof ethanol 190 proof ethanol (about 5% water in the ethanol portion) denatured with pure n-heptane

although there are other opinions.

Denatured 95% Ethanol with 5% Heptane ok for extraction?

It will make the ethanol solution more hydrophillic, however this will not help your extraction process. If experimentally you find it helps with your winterization process I would add the water after you extract. Only, only, if you have experiemental evidence of it aiding in the process. I would not be able to predict the outcome of this dilution and how it would affect winterization but I do not think it will help during extraction at all, if anything it will pull more unwanted water-soluable …

if you’re recovering it, and only using it to winterize, I would use 190 without heptane, and not bother with the potential complication.

The cost really only comes into play when your going through drums of the stuff. at $75gal for drinkable 190, and a whopping 10% assumed loss for every 100g you winterize, is it worth it?
