I tryed this with a coil from a tank that I cut the diptube off of and it did I fact improve filtration speed on the crc being at a high temp thca wonāt crash at. I used a 6x48 spool as my jacket for my recovery path with a 32ft 1/2coil inside thatās hooked between my material column and crc. Itās deffinatly condensing some vapor befor it gets to my 25ft coil pot. Iām noticing a 25% decrease in dry ice usage. I donāt have a chiller so I use a injection and recovery coil. My incoming recovery vapors are 77.5 going into the crossflow condenser shell. Temp entering the tube side aka coil. Are - 34f and exiting the coil at 55f. So extracting cold, well filtering warm. I noticed I when I loaded up 1000g baked b81 and ran 4x 3.25lbs run threw it came out very nice. I think the warm filtration made the filter media more absorbant also. I got the same results next day with only 600g of b81 but needed to throttle down the flow a tad.
What size coil is in you exchanger? Mine only around 32ft half inch. Iām only getting going from - 35f to 55f with 78f incoming recovery vapor.
I was using 3/8ā on my prototype.
Did your shop TIG weld it, or use stick or MIG??
I routinely had donuts welded in the top of open jacketed columns, as well as a half coupling, when that was all that was available.
As a former weld engineer and certified ASME Section VIII welder myself, I can tell you that 300 Series stainless is an easy and forgiving alloy to weld and any competent GTAW (TIG) welder should be able weld in two half donuts and a half coupling without undue distortion.
I found being able to make what I needed from whut-ah-had critical to freely exercising my creative juices, so when I developed the Terpenator series, et al, my vision was impaired in both eyes with cataracts, so I located three weld shops and two machine shops that I could rely on. They are worth their weight in gold.
You seem to be having fun, but may I suggest that you search diligently for and cultivate a competent TIG welder to maximize your creative endeavors.
Edit: I just read far enough down to see you have given up on a competent shop in Oklahoma, so this is beating a dead horse.
Have you tried advertising on Craigs List, etc for an ASME Section IX TIG welder skilled in thin wall applications
Have you looked at machine shops with TIG welding capabilities?

That portion of what you outlined was when I lived in SETX. Iām sure he MIGād it. And the only ASME shops around that area will not give you the time of day for small jobs. Their portfolios with the refineries trumps anything else. They only refer to other shops in different states they have ties with. One shop said their insurance company just wonāt allow them to mess with such a small jobs.
I moved to OKC and did find a TIG welder to do small jobs but he was not a Sanitary welder. It didnāt look good but it did do the job. I just started outsourcing to IndoFab and others.
Anybody in the OKC area need some free Sieve beads size 4a?

Iāve galled the nuts onto those bolts on more than one occasion. Stainless on stainless just isnāt the right response without anti-seize imo.

I am starting to retool for the harvest season and am wanting to try this out.
With the common tank insert coil having the in/out ports at the same level and not self draining is there much holdup volume when clearing or emptying the end of batch?
The volume of chilled tane that ran across the coil was usually at the level of the incoming port going back into the solvent tank when I had my prototype going. My coil ran around -40Āŗ when I had my chiller sit at -45ĀŗC. The coils found in the 200lb solvent tanks with the 6" lid would work best in my opinion. Long enough to run the cross flow and the remaining butane left in the tank I would clear with a shot of N2. Shoot for smaller diameter column around the coil so not much is collected during running. This is the reason why I was searching for someone to do a 4" column wrapped around a 1/2" coil.
So your just draining out the bottom of the column holding the coil into ur tank? After the cross flow condensing.
