Wanted to understand something…
So we do brine-salt-washes to dry out Heptane (for exmpl), now there’s less water - and less water-soluble dirt, right?
And also - shouldn’t then… This brine wash be last one? We just “dried” it. Usually after that ppl do regular water wash, not the other way. Why? NaCl cant dissolve in Heptane.
Oh, can you explain plz, why is it bad to have water in extract? It can’t be high %.
Also - would it be a big problem in further distillation? I’ve heard that water is not “best” to have there - but until you reach cannabinoid fraction - there’s no water.
I’ve heard that water can do… Idk what it can do, actually, heard myth it can make D8
i doubt it can isomerize 9THC or CBD into D8 with only heat + water (or at least not that much%) - i think its myth or some sort. Otherwise it would be used alot - there would be some “D8 water-heat SOP” trend
Water can be an oxidizer of the material as it brings In atmosphere. You may notice it almost will look like a whipped honey as the o2 molecules of the water become hydrophobic to the oil but with enough sheer will eventually solute together. Yes this will also administer aeration but you can remove the water that has partially emulsified by running a roto at 100c on your bath and deep vac. It will eventually be removed. But you will have an almost carotenoid depo orange but can become translucent with a carbon scrub as well.
Formally & simply enough this can be a method used with Quiso washing as well.
As per the isomerization capabilities you’d likely still need to add a base to do anything significantly over .04-.4% itself overall tac.
Just my 2 ¢
Keep in mind this would be for just oil no solvent and only water
Brine I use to make the water less favorable to absorb solvent/oil
Take Dcm it dissolves 2 mo of water in each liter of dcm
But 8 ml of dcm/oil can dissolve in One liter of water x liters used for washing this adds up
Other recommendation go easy on the water volume you use your extract is cleaner at the end with 5 x 1 liter wash
Than 4x a 2 liter wash saving 3 liters in the wash
Remover that the warmer the solvent the better it dissolves try to work with approx 25C water yust watch the boiling point of the other solvent dcm Orr alkane or tolueen
As for some sop s water can give isomerizations basicly all chlorine reagents used since it chlorinates wich releases with heat forming hcl wich with heat will Isomerize the 9 to 8
Your heptane is about 5.55 mM in water period. doing a LLE with “brine” which I assume you mean saturated NaCl , there may be a reduction in water content by a factor of 10, perhaps to 0.5mM. “In extraction protocols involving heptane (e.g., for nonpolar compounds), multiple brine washes are recommended to clear emulsions and minimize residual water, confirming practical efficacy…but it may well be more about clearing emulsions. At scale the disposal of saturated Brine might be a problem.
Ask your local EPA about saturated NaCl. I really do not know..what if your local sewer plant doesn’t want 1000 gallon slugs of concentrated NaCl? I was thinking more about the expense of diluting it.
