We just bought our biannual side of beef. Broke into the T bones first. I can’t tell you how delicious this beef is. These cows eat grass, walk in the mountains and have one bad day in their lives. Delicious.
We also sent our two Kune-Kune piggies to freezer camp. Those are pork rib steaks. So good. We’ve also tried the brats, bacon, sausage and ham. So delicious.
We bought a whole cow last time, but it was smaller. I think last time was 450+ lbs. This time we got a half and it was 375#. We paid $5/lb to the rancher and $150 kill fee plus $1.59/lb cut and wrap.
The pork was more because I had them make delicious sausage, hams and brats. But we raised the pigs so there was so other cost at this time. We will absolutely do more Kune Kune pigs. Easiest keepers on the homestead.
We are getting going on Idaho pasture pigs this next spring. Getting a breeding trio (2 gilts and a boar). Going to get them going on the electric fencing young and move them up along the creek bed and In our front pasture during the months where the weather allows grazing.
I got mine from these guys. Seems like really good pricing. For a ½ cow roughly 300 lbs. It’d cost me less than $6lb. Correction, less than $7 a lb. I didn’t factor in processing.
We had a hot wire for a minute, but they never called for it. As long as they were fed, they were happy to lay around. I wanted more pasture for them but we would need to redo our fencing. I fed them grain and alfalfa pellets. I tried regular alfalfa but they just made bedding out of it, which seemed ridiculous not only to me, but also the horses-- which is why we needed the hot wire.
The pigs were am amazing addition to our little ecosystem. Between composting, the dogs, chickens and pigs, we had no green waste. When guests go to scrape their plates in the trash I pick those calories right out!
I notice it when I travel and have to throw away so many food scraps. It seems so wasteful to me. I have a little dream of shredding all of our paper and cardboard to feed a giant worm bed.
I went to poker and they had free chips one day, yesterday they had pizza. My diet sux. literally eat beer. I dunno how i function but i should eat more food and healthier too. i dont weigh myself but did and somehow ive lost 15 lbs during this covid thing? thats not good because i was skinny already.
its obvious but i call it a crappetite. ill bet id be hugry without all the empty beer calories. For years i was a evening shift ups driver and wouldnt eat till after midnight and thats still my feeding style. I wasnt a drunk back then but i still remember bringing like half a burger out the guard shack at the end and they make fun of me why didnt i just eat it.
You wouldn’t eat until after midnight because the alcohol doesn’t have as great of a effect when your stomach is full. I’m an alcoholic thumps I know how it goes
