Extracting and distilling CBD from industrial hemp (THC<0.2%)

OK. Here is a second bottom line…more optimistic!

Considering that I already have 35kg of industrial hem in stock and I’ve never done this before, I guess it is a good thing for me to start playing with it and learning in the same time…
I took a crash course into the chromatography that I need (both column chromatography and thin layer chromatography TLC ) as it seems that I will definitely need it…

So, I will do the following things:

  1. Buying the chromatography equipment.
  2. Making the crude extract of the biomass using ethanol.
  3. Cleaning the crude with activated carbon (checking the ph!) and bentonite and filtering.
  4. Removing the ethanol.
  5. Distilling what ever remain…
  6. Adding ethanol back to the distilled hearts.
  7. Column chromatographying the hearts from the above step.
  8. TLCing the fractions from the above step to identify the CBD from the fractions.
  9. Removing the ethanol to get a pure CBD honey.
  10. Sending to a lab for certifying the results.

The most challenging part is to identify which Chroma fractions are the good stuff and which are to be thrown away…

I might end up saving the pesticides!! ha ha ha

You are underestimating and over complicating things
What’s your end product ?

Ok here we go
Extract at room temp with ethanol
But better yet cryo with dry ice
Place in oven at 90C for 10 days
Your thc content will be half
Winterize your extract as you do
But get some dry ice to do the last bit
Pass your winterized crude treu AC
The hardwood type and some bentonite
The b80 or t5 not any of the others
Do this 3x treu the same powders
If content with crude distill you should have about 45/50 gr of crude on the kg of biomass
Distill your crude
Crystelize your crude
Take the motherliquer and make an end product that has some dilution
I Am in Amsterdam the Netherlands feel free to come by

Thanks for your detailed explanation!!!

You lost me in 2 places:

  1. “Place in oven at 90C for 10 days” = to put the extract (containing ethanol) in a sealed jar and put it in a oven at 90C for 10 days?! Or without the lid and let it cook at 90C for 10 days…then add back ethanol and do the winterizing an continue the remaining steps?
  2. “Crystallize your crude” = Crystallize your distillate (heart), right?..since the above step was “Distill your crude”

Thank you for your kind invitation!! I will definitely visit you at some point but right now I’m just trying to learn the basics of this activity using some shitty biomass and trying to get something good, safe and legal out of it…

Cheers!

1 indeed no solvent present boiling point of etho is lower
It s called the oven tech

2 indeed crystelize your distillate sorry

While this thread has focused on the technical aspects for the most part you should also consider the economics. I’m not sure what distillate is selling for in your country but here in the U.S. you would be upside down in your costs to extract and distill 2% biomass. In other words, you would lose money. If you’re talking small amounts for yourself with a garage operation that’s another matter but otherwise it might not be a money maker for you.

Thanks for your comments!
You are totally right, but I’m at a moment that I have no experience what so ever, I just bought a 5L SPD equipment + related stuff and 35kg of legal industrial hemp…
Starting from here, since I already spent the money …this will be a good start to learn this craft, extracting gold out of shit! ha ha ha
You can imagine that if I will be able to get something out of this, then working with real stuff it will be a breeze!
So, this is indeed a “garage” activity, no profit intended at this point in time…

I started with crap material and took me five years to make a profit
But man the words of thank you of those that my extracts have helped
Have made me a beter man

Just run it all the way to isolate for an easy THC remediation

Good news! The company who provided me the biomass told me that they have used NO pesticides! Only one insecticide 0.07 litri/10000sqm …which is an extremely low quantity. So the biomass is quite non toxic…at least pesticide/insecticide related
