Diaphragm Pump Maintenance. (Welch Dryfast)

thanx heaps I shall take a look then.

what are your thoughts on one of the vacuubrand md series ?

40dba is ok

is 1.5mbar enough for THC (not a big problem if not)

You could get two, use one for your volatiles, and the other paired with a turbo pump for your main body @squig It’ll be quiet.

Vacuubrsnd makes good pumps but I wouldn’t use the higher micron pumps at all. Get thier lower ones. Also distillation really likes dual stage oil vane.

what is wrong with there higher micron pumps ?

I am not using them as you guys are I distill organics that boil around 280C and have to
bring them down to under 200C.

I use fractional distillation rather than short path and at times reflux under vacuum
and I don’t use rotovap to strip solvents.

though I would like to sometimes distill THC but that is not that big a thing if I can not.

silence is the most important thing here.

If it’s solvents then diaphragm is fine. If you want to boil solids then you’ll need vane pump.

cool

again thankyou the pumps you led me to though very pricey are as you say the best

It costs a pretty penny for something that sucks that hard, is reliable, and meets the noise thresholdyou require. If you can afford it, Edwards is hard to beat.

Well you get what you pay for. Edwards isn’t a brand that fucks around. You don’t get dead pumps after two weeks and you don’t have to rebuild it ten times before the Edwards needs a rebuild. Great pumps.

It makes me impossibly happy to have a single comment where I finally say, “I 100% agree with you.” Thank you. Made my day. I 100% agree.

actually the more i look the more it is the edwards rv3 that i want.

48 dba though a little loud can be silenced with the right materials to be whisper quite.

I can see cheap rebuild kits but is there a case kit as well so I can change the metal casing
in the oil reservoir as amines will bind to the metal and are not able to be destroyed with out
oxidizing acids like sulfuric acid peroxide mix which will kill the vacuum.

They do make these for the big boys, 9db reduction at ultimate so aprox. sounds like a fridge hum.

I am sure you could build one cheaper, and with a diaphram or even scroll it would be dead quiet. Vs buying a really expensive pump. Shit just get some foam / egg cartons and line the new pump closet.

People don’t like using them without built on fans. These boxes make shit get hot. And the cover is actually more critical for motor. The front end doesn’t generate noice other than a low ticking.

the thought had crossed my mind.

having tried multiple high end and low end vacs and trying to cover the noise the problems I
have faced are

heat

the exuast contains a lot of noise so a baffle system is needed.

and of course chemicals being stuck in the baffle etc as a lot of my chemicals I don’t want sitting
around after I have finished.

I have come up with a solution though and spdking has kind of led me to it.

I can work with 48 dba thats ok so the idea is I just hire them and return them.

not my mess traces could have been anyones.

Alot of the new model pumps are very quiet. The older pumps and cheap import pumps are very loud. They don’t have the super efficient motors the higher end pumps do. S basic e2m30 has a nharley hum. The new Edwards pumps are about ten times quieter. Literally just a light hum. Some dishwasher and washer machines are louder than some vacuum pumps now adays.

Also one of the best ways to make a quiet shield is go get a 20 gallon Gama top style drum. Cut 1/3 of it off linear down the drum. Spray inside with 3m sticky. Line it with 1/2 or more insulation for noise prevention.

If you want cut a hole on the top of the unit as it sits and add a small carbon filter or something that is not passive and throw a small exhaust fan over it. The exhaust won’t be noisy but it can use the venting to draw fresh air in.

I spoke to a welch rep yesterday. He said the new models are no longer teflon coated. Just pure ptfe.
What companies do you recomend for a good diaphragm.

I am a huge fan of vacuubrand. They have solid parts. Not flapper parts. No joke they are amazing.

ptfe is the same thing dude.

teflon is just a trade name

Welch reps have been known to lie - they aren’t pump specialist. They are sales men.

the ptfe is sprayed onto the block. After first rebuild it basically peels away.
