Cold ethanol pumps

that all depends on how many head feet of pumping you require, That is a huge factor.Do you need a self priming pump as well?

What’s the make and model on that pump?

Thanks in advance

No more than 15 ft, self priming would be nice, but not necessarily essential

Does the pump have to generate pressure? or is this just to move fluid?

Just to move fluid

Go with a mag drive option that is a good bet.

Hydra-cell likely has something that would work

Has anyone tried this pump that is rated specifically for -80 ethanol?

It’s explosion proof and cheaper than a lot of the pumps i’m seeing up thread.

Viking SEP pumps are rated -70C and continuous duty. May have something for -80C in a mechanical seal or mag drive. option.https://www.vikingpump.com/pumps/liquid-specific/4197-sep-series

only rated for “beer”, which I’ve always found pretty difficult to set on fire.

That Viking pump looks like a winner. And you can mate it to the exp proof motor of your choice.

How hard did you try?

Yep that looks like a decent starting point.

I’m still pretty impressed with this $500 GPI methanol pump.

It’s getting the job done, but not as fast as I’d like.

We (TCW) are working with Viking to offer 4197-SEP pumps, specifically designed for cold extraction applications down to -70 °C. We’re offering them individually and as part of our filtration packages. The heads are pre-mounted to a skid with an XP-rated motor. We’ll be rolling them out in the coming weeks, but DM me in the meantime if you have any questions.

Our 316 Stainless Steel SimpleSolvent series AODD pumps will definitely be a more economical solution, but are only manufacturer-rated down to -40 °C. I know folks do use them at colder temps, with the knowledge that colder temperatures inherently make diaphragms more susceptible to premature failure.

the pump is AODD centrifugal so its not self-priming so it must be at the lowest point of the system

finally failed after many months of solid service…

AND it was back online after simply swapping in a new ($4.49) toggle switch from Home Despot.

not sure I can blame the cold for that one…

it is nominally rated for 12GPM. I’d like twice that for the current fuge, and 50GPM for anything larger.

Just remember, folks. That a pump’s flow rate is usually provided for room temperature water, not cold ethanol. Flow rates are slower with the cold ethanol.

Usually true but if you’re pumping against vacuum then colder is better, to a certain degree.
