Attempting to solve the cause of "sugar rails" developing on cannabis plants

What are the 4 strains? I’m seeing GSC and OGKB traits in all of the leaves. The top one looks a lot like an OG kush that I know the guy with it has been breeding with for a long time.

Resin rails, many years ago I heard that term while small scale pheno hunting. Over the years and thousands of seeds later that characteristic is still just as desirable as ever. I wish there was an environmental epigenetic type switch that could be thrown to create resin rails on cultivars that just do not exhibit that characteristic. When you figure out the environmental cue(s) that causes it let us know, until then we will continue selecting and breeding for that and other resin production characteristics.

I’m working on it, I’m not certain it’s environmental (yet/entirely?) but I’m certain there is a “cue”… I’m also certain I’m beginning to understand the cue(s).

With a few tricks i was able to take a strain outside of the four displaying the curling… i made it curl.

This will take time, i need to document a lot of information in a standardized format in order to find clear evidence of the suspected cue(s) that can support my claims instead of “hey look what i did”.

I’m out of time though, all my plants are down.

Until next year, i have a lot of work to do. Time will be spent preparing to document this correctly and turn it into to useful information in a respected format. (Aka not recorded in a thread on a drug forum).

I’ve had the unfortunate pleasure of growing a few dozen varieties affected, to varying degrees, by Japanese Beetles, and haven’t seen this phenotypic trait. As for trichomes’ roles in plant defense, they pose a physical barrier to insects but they also serve as a factory and reservoir for metabolites that would otherwise be toxic to the plant, so there are probably several things going on here.

Do you have any recommendations or suggestions as to what the “several things” could be?

Is there any analysis/factors of influence you can think of that i should do/review?

What’s your goal and what resources do you have at your disposal?

Understanding the cause(s) and inevitably discovering what prompts the behavior.

Of course there is the possibility it’s entirely genetic and that this happens without prompt but given what I’ve witnessed i have reasonable doubt, even moreso after I started stressing the plant and it responded by curling to a stress that could be considered environmental… now the response could be genetic… with an environmental trigger…?

If it is genetics paired with environment, i want to stimulate the plant with an artificial environment.

(EDIT: The root of it is of course genetics but I’m certain a majority of cannabis plants are capable of performing this trick, what I’m after is looking into why they perform this trick and what benefit it has and how i can “trick” them into growing in such a way with repeatability, i already know this can both happen/not happen in the same strain from my observations, plants aren’t stupid… there is a reason for this occurrence)

I’m trying to understand what needs to be stimulated/replicated to prompt this behavior, that’s the goal.

Better plants = better products.

Anything i don’t have access to i can acquire.

Both money and time are of no object, any recommendations you have for solving/dissecting this would be appreciated.

Your edit is on the money, every plant phenotype is the product of its genome interacting with the environment. Growing a crop that expresses this trait to a high degree is fairly easy in concept. You have to match the right genome with the right environment. The process getting there isn’t nearly as simple, but if you have appropriate resources, it’s very doable.
