LLE first attempt. Pleasantly surprised.

I just did my first LLE followed with a magsil column. The first pass had quite a bit of red and it came out nicely in the first couple of washes. Is this a typical result from LLE? image

The image is pre and post.

This is a typical result of a magsil column. But not LLE, what solvents were you using?

I used heptane. I noticed that the water had a pink hue and the heptane mixture got less and less red between each wash.

For the column I did run some straight heptane through it after all the material had drained down. Is that recommended?

Yes this is referred to as Elution. Is this cbd crude or thc crude?

This was first pass CBD distillate. The purpose was two fold; pesticide remediation and increase product clarity / potency.

It also seems like quite a bit of terps were washed out, which for us was an added bonus. I was mildly surprised by the amount of “gunk” LLE got rid of. The water held quite a bit of smells and discoloration.

I’ll run some more next weekend and take some more pictures.

I did 200ml heptane to 200g first pass. The first sep funnel picture is from 10% brine @ 8ph. Notice the pink hue.

This is the color of the mains for second pass.

This is the amount of tails I left in the boiling flask. I lost close to 150g from 468g of distillate. I wonder if I didn’t elude the column enough with heptane. How much are you supposed to use to flush the column? Until it runs clear?

Acidic wash. Then neutral to finish

I only noticed a small amount of emulsion, and only during the 4pH run.

I did 6 washes total:
1L 10% brine 8pH
1L 10% brine 8pH
1L 10% brine 4pH
1L 10% brine 4pH
1L 10% brine neutral
1L 10% brine neutral

You should wash your column until it goes clear.
Or maybe use an alcohol to pick up whatever remains.

When we were first experimenting with procedures for pesticide removal, one of the trials was excessive LLE.

I ran like 30 basic, 30 acidic, then 30 neutral. Pulled samples every 5th wash.

One thing that stood out, after the 10th or so acidic wash it appeared to be doing nothing. However, once I hit the 25th or so wash, a new emulsion appeared.

What was your best guess as to what the new emulsion was?

I love science.
I’m currently doing 4-5 washes.
Start with enzyme, then slightly acidic to remove enzyme
Then 8.5 brine, then neutral brine.
If it needs more I do more

The enzyme is for degumming? What type of enzyme is used?

I can’t remember. I’m pretty sure it’s the same one xtractorD sells

And correct. It is used to degum

I think I remember reading somewhere that alcohol can pick up any pesticides in the column, that’s why I didn’t dare to try it. Is that a correct assumption?

Unless your using magsil PR, your more than likely not remediating many pesticides with the other powders in ur column. If theres no silica in the mix, i would do a rinse of 200 proof ethanol after u use the column and save that for a “tails” run

I’m using magsil PR.
