Monthly rations minus the veggies.
support local butchery you can some times get a killer deal.
my 2 cents.
Just be careful if you have kiddos running around, do not want the dog licking or playing with them after it eats. Even reputable brands for raw food can contain listeria or salmonella.
If you are worried about that you probably shouldn’t ever let a dog (or any other animal) lick you, regardless of their diet…
your dog looks like hes on roids.
if you feed raw you just kinda get over the fear of food poisoning. I feed in the cage but im sure theres chicken juices everywhere. gordon ramsey would havve a field day.
After seeing the things my 2 year old daughter tries to eat…
Stomach of steel.
Same page lol
Do you train bite/protection work with him? Gorgeous Mal.
My dogs litter had a couple dogs who went to pet type homes and never trained and at kibble. Fat dogs nearly unrecognizable as working line other than the colors.
My 16 year old pup had really bad digestive problems. When his stomach got upset, we would automatically do chicken, rice, yogurt and frozen mixed vegetables (make sure there are no lima beans!) Despite his genetic predisposition, he lived so much longer than we thought he ever would.
My 15 year old Rotty/Lab/Golden eats chicken drumsticks, deer organ and neck meat. She gets rice, barley, brewer’s yeast and frozen mixed veggies as a side. Her hips are in way better shape than she should be and she sees really well compared to the rest of the litters.
I spend as much time and money as my kids need. I love them.
EDIT: I guess the rice and barley is cooked, but it helps cut down on the cost when I can’t use exclusively deer and chicken.
raw food doesnt come in brands IMO. Its human grade food so you just buy it. not prepackaged “raw” dog food. that stuff is bad because to be profitable they buy loads of meat that the reefer trailer failed and is no longer human grade. Theres a large market for meat that got too warm in shipping and got refused for human use. there was a failed tv show on shipping that showed it= something like they measure it refuse it and it goes to dog food. Also the prepackaged branded 'RAW" isnt raw at all its cooked. Unless you get the ground up wild beaver type and yes id keep my kids away. that shit is gross, may as well feed skunks.
I want to switch to a raw diet for the dogs in my house. I give em some Portland pet food stuff that smells like a really good mre. It’s human grade, but I think I am still going to go raw when I get there
Goat lung, liver and heart
Have switched all my dogs to raw and they are fucking loving it. Can’t ever go back.
Excited to see how the 2 puppies that are being fed raw will look (muscle mass wise since they will have been feed raw 99percent of their lives)
my version of dogs is they should be skinny. you mentioned muscle mass is why i mentioned that. my dog has a doublle coat so I cant see her muscles like that monster malinois in this thread. you want them skinny because thats the way they should be. its natural to have to hunt for food and its unlikely an animal gets fat or muscular. Ill take an extra lifetime of a healthy dog over a big monster dog who may get injured due to the weight.
My girl is breed standard at 55-60 lbs. Her dad is around 90 and is a true monster at shutzhund and very intimidating. My dogs weight varies due to me feeding raw vs the exact thing daily all year. i think fasting is good for a day- no carnivore in nature catches something evvery single day.
Yeah…I don’t agree with you there.
I was just researching= my dog is a female working line at 55 - 60 lbs- too skinny for you? Skinny is a relative term. She has POWER. but shes not fat. I wont ever be that guy who overfeeds dogs thinking its a good thing. My dumbass uncle doesnt get it… I tell him to make her do a behavior to get fed- no free rides. its as easy as saying sit> then he overfeeds all at once. She has way more fun if you keep telling her to do something and then gets rewarded, and at some poing you can give a jackpot and throw all the food out. Its the same psychology casinos use to keep people interested. https://hausambergshepherds.com/height-and-weight-of-the-german-shepherd/
If you say athletic I get it and agree. But when you say skinny I think emaciated lol
I agree, most people over feed their dogs.
I know this thread is about BARF which I swear 17+ years ago when I researched it it stood for Bones A Raw Food. Another option is cooked food. I started my last Italian Greyhound on home cooked food about 4 years before he passed which was about 13 years ago. He only made it to 11. The reason I started feeding him home cooked food is he would get sick and when I called the vet they would say boil chicken and add rice so I started researching and also discovered what they put in dog food. My IG in the pic below has eaten only home cooked food for 12 years and he is 13 now in this pic and runs fast like a young dog and very healthy and has not been to the vet once since puppy shots. I am not Muslim but we both only eat Halal chicken. His is baked not boiled. I gave up nasty yellow slimy grocery store chicken years ago. All my beef and pork comes from Porter Road as they do not sell meat harvested from tortured animals and farmers use sustainable farming. I refuse to buy any meat from a grocery store or even a local butcher and no I am not a PETA weirdo. He eats 1 cup twice a day and only 13lbs and very lean. Only treats are freeze dried liver and Blue buffalo brand bones for his teeth. Only drinks about 1/4 cup bottled water a day and shits like a human.
I’ve seen it called RMB lately (Raw Meaty Bones)
Cooking meat denatures the protein, which isn’t ideal for the dogs, and makes the bones brittle, which can be deadly for them.
Mine fasts 1 day a week, she gets 1% of her body weight in food in the summer, up to 3% in the winter. She does most of the moderation there, she burys any extra food she gets, that’s when we dial back her rations.
Doesn’t your stomach acid do the same thing(denature protein)?
My boy doesn’t eat animal bones so no worries there. I do know raw meat is better for a dog than cooked meat but I am not into dealing with buying organs and feeding my dog raw meat. One thing I am certain of is a balanced cooked diet is better than dog food so I am doing the next best thing.
Absolutely avoid “dog food”
