Cleaning a heating mantle

I bought a used heating mantle off ebay that has kind of funky smell to it when its running. The fabric is a bit darkened in places and while I dont really care about how it looks as long as it works, the smell makes me a bit concerned about what it was used for before me and any potential fumes.

Is there any way to clean up the fabric of the mantle at all?

Edit: Found this (sorry google search seems to be better than ours) Cleaning heating mantle - #3 by Sweetsengineer recommending jacking up the heat outdoors to burn off any funk. Gonna give that a shot.

I think they sell replacements for some of them at least

put it outside and turn it up high with just probe in, and let it roast off the darkness without the flask in it.

it will become more white again and stop off gassing at your low temps.

Roast it in a well ventilated area. I was doing some tryptamine research on a mantle and must have spilled some, was doing another process recently at high temp and ::POOF:: a cloud of mothball vapor
